Flawed argument from the Metropolitan Black Police Association that the London police force does not reflect the people it is meant to serve.
The Guardian newspaper quotes the BPA as saying:
"The 2011 census indicated that over 40% of Londoners were from BME backgrounds, whilst only 10% of MPS police officers were from BME communities." http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/apr/21/metropolitan-police-institutionally-racist-black
This assumes that the population of London remains broadly static throughout the day.
However huge numbers of (mainly "white") people commute into London each day, therefore the ratio will fluctuate throughout the day.
In any case, are police supposed to reflect the areas they cover?
The population of Bournemouth is elderly, are we to insist on geriatric police in the Bournemouth area?
Or perhaps we should argue that the Metropolitan Police should reflect the people who pay for it. How many of the 40% BME individuals in London are paying the full cost of the policing services they enjoy? I would guess they pay very little - no representation without taxation, to reverse the American saying.
