Astonishing to hear on the Today programme this morning pipsqueak presenter Evan Davis throwing a tantrum with the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Like a badly behaved child for five minutes the BBC presenter indulged his temper and insulted one of the most senior officers of state. We know it was for five minutes as Evan Davis sheepishly admitted as much later in the programme (although at the time it seemed to go on for ages).
A more professional interviewer (John Humphrys for instance) would have kept his temper and simply asked the question again using different words and in a more forensic style.
Not for the first time I concluded that Evan Davis was an idiot.
How much public money did Evan Davis waste through his temper tantrum? The ten past eight interview is a premium slot, and if five minutes of this had been sold commercially it would have generated a very considerable sum of money. Perhaps the BBC can fine its errant presenter by estimating the amount and deducting it from his wages.
Later in the programme Nick Robinson referred to the incident as a "spat" which seems to have been an attempt at damage limitation - it was hardly a spat, it was a great loss of self-control unrivalled in radio broadcasting.
