Have finished reading Imperial Bedrooms by Bret Easton Ellis. It was sort of OK until the last twenty pages when the descriptions of violence became obscene and I threw it away (very rare for me to throw books away - actually put them in the rubbish). He is an exceptional writer with a sort of rococo-nihilist style that is very affecting. But he ruins his books by trying to include plots which are so far-fetched they are derisory. He is useless at narrative drive. If ever there was a writer who needs to be told write about what you know it is Bret Easton Ellis.
He could write a really great book if he would remember he is a Jane Austen not a Raymond Chandler.
