It is an elegant solution to the problem - on the one hand it provides asylum seekers with a safe environment where they can wait until they are able to return to their homes; on the other hand it provides much-needed investment to the countries volunteering to take part in the scheme.
Of course, those economic migrants who are using "asylum" as an excuse to gain entry to Australia without going through the immigration process will be disappointed.
And those who prey on illegal migrants (from evil people-traffickers to lefty politicians using "grievance" as a way of manipulating votes) will not be pleased.
But Australia has shown the way forward for the United Kingdom.
