I am not too bothered by the equal marriage legislation currently going through Parliament.
If (as I believe) marriage is a sacrament then the state can no more redefine this than any other sacrament. Therefore a gay marriage will be no more of a marriage than a marriage between divorced people. It will just be one more state sanctioned contract masquerading as something it is not.
The difficulty will come if an attempt is made to use equalities legislation to compel the Anglican church to make gay marriage a sacrament.
The contest will either destroy the Anglican Church or it will destroy equalities legislation (and with three million communicants and 70% support in the population I do not think it will be the Church that will fall).
As you can see, Norman Smith (BBC journalist) is reporting that Shadow Minister for Women and Equality Yvette Cooper is already attempting to pressure the Anglican Church.
Perhaps, in their hubris (and there is a lot of that about today) the equalities lobby is already over-reaching itself.
