Spluttering with indignation, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown writes an anti-Royal piece in today's Independent.
She refers to democracy, but does not acknowledge the overwhelming democratic wish of the people to keep the present system intact.
Possibly she is out of touch on this subject, has not researched it properly, and is just voicing her prejudices.
The comments section below her article shows worrying examples of chav-hate ("Only the ignorant and under-educated part of the masses like royalty. But only because they're on TV and in the papers all the time. Just look at Peter Andre, an uneducated twit with an IQ that struggles to get into double figures. Very similar attributes as the royal family. That's why they like them.")

Well Yasmin has my support, and my family have been under the shackles of this pernicious 'institution' of 'class and sycophancy' for generations. I find it particularly ironic that the soldiers who fight and sometimes die in Afghanistan in the name of 'democracy' pledge allegiance to a blantantly undemocratic monarch. What happened to leading by example?
The soldiers are in Afghanistan not because they were ordered there by the monarch they were ordered there by Labour minister John Reid (who presumably you voted for, as you do not sound like a Conservative). If you recall, John Reid said they were likely to complete their mission in Helmand "without a shot being fired" - more lies from a government that lied about every possible subject you can think of. John Reid, instead of being disgraced, is now in the House of Lords behaving as if he were a respectable member of society - that would be ironic if it were not so disgusting that the middle class concept of irony is not appropriate.
