On last night's This Week Alan Johnson chose as his "political moment of the week" the publication of the immigration figures which show net immigration into the United Kingdom of 251,000 in 2011.
A discussion followed on whether the government would achieve its immigration targets with this level of immigration.
No-one was interested in what this statistic tells us about the economy.
If massive immigration into the United Kingdom is occurring, it must mean that our economy is doing reasonably well. Failed economies such as Greece, southern Ireland and Portugal are experiencing massive emigration and "lost generations" without a future. The fact that many of these "lost generations" are voting with their feet and moving to the United Kingdom must mean that they are optimistic about the economic future of this country and are willing to relocate here to share that future.
