The welfare state cannot survive globalisation.
No politician, from either main party is telling the electorate this, but it is behind all the manoeuvring we currently see at Westminster.
The squeeze in access to welfare in the West is going to be permanent, and presumably on-going.
Of course, the left would argue that the solution is to extend high standards of welfare to all the poor people of the world, and this is a laudable goal.
But we are going to wait a long long time (a century or more) for this to happen.
