Labour MPs are required to give a proportion of their salary to the Labour Party

Clive Betts MP on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning made the surprising statement that Labour MPs are required to give a proportion of their salary to the Labour Party.

How much do they have to give?  Is this a flat amount or does it vary according to the financial circumstances of each MP?  How long has this levy been in operation?

Especially I am interested in whether there is any correlation between what MPs were giving to their party and what they were claiming during the expenses scam - effectively were Labour MPs making exaggerated (and in many cases downright false) expenses claims to compensate for the money they had to give to central party funds.
