Lots of coverage in the media about the very public comments by Philip H. Gordon, American Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, that the United Kingdom should not leave the European Union.
Everyone is being terribly polite about this foreign intervention in British affairs.
Presumably they all think a diplomat (even an undiplomatic diplomat such as this) should be treated with courtesy.
Perhaps I could be a little less courteous and say: fuck off Philip H Gordon and fuck off Obama Administration.
And is it not the case that British-American relations since 1941 have been a one-way street, with all the giving on one side and all the taking on the other? What exactly do we get out of the trans-Atlantic relationship (entirely unspecial from my point of view) apart from the ability of scumbag politicians to "punch above their weight"? Wouldn't a period of American isolationism be a great relief to everyone?
And while we are on the subject I am not happy about the monstrous new American embassy being constructed in London - this is the sort of structure an occupying power would construct in a quasi-colonial possession. It is going to be hideous in appearance. Why, in an era of instant electronic communications, do they need such a vast structure?
