One of the books I read over the Christmas break was Childish Loves by Benjamin Markovits. I chose this book for three reasons: firstly Markovits is connected to Royal Holloway (and actually uses the name Founders in the novel); secondly it is about Byron; thirdly it was recommended by Mark Lawson. On the whole the book is good, although not the same quality as Playing Days.
In his review Mark Lawson describes the novel as "odd".
Which seems to echo a section in the book where one of the characters describes the narrator as "odd".
The other book I am reading at the moment is Microcosm by Norman Davies. It is a history of the Silesian city of Bresslau (or Wroclaw as it is currently called). Everything in the book is new to me, which is good.
