In this article about migration policy and the presence in the United Kingdom of hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants Sunny Hundal fails to acknowledge the effectiveness of government "nudge" messages.
I welcome the Go Home vans as they are, for the first time, communicating to the wider population that it is not racist to want illegal migration to stop.
This is important because since 1997 the message has been "hey there's really nothing we can do about migrants without legal documents, and hey we are actually really cool about more diversity at the bottom end of the wage scale, and hey (little Blairite catch in the voice at this point) you know, if you even want to discuss the issue of migration you're a racist".
The Go Home vans are lancing that painful boil and the suppurating puss of left-wing cant is being drained from discussion on migration, making the whole debate less poisonous for everyone.
And as for Sunny Hundal's point about the impossibility of applying the law to illegal migrants already here, he is of course referring to the state sector's inability to deal with the backlog. Were the whole process to be privatised the backlog would be cleared in no time. And Mr Hundal should give a little thought to what would happen to respect for the law if it is not enforced in this area.
