Above: I was walking in the lane early evening yesterday and I saw a brightly coloured insect flutter in front of me and settle on the hedge. I had never seen this moth before. Gently I caught it in my hands and took it into the house where I put it in a glass jar and photographed it (and set it free afterwards).
Above: looking in the Guardian Guide To Moths (which I always have to hand) I identified it as a Cinnabar moth. Apparently the moth is quite common although I have never seen one before. The moth (actually the larvae) feeds voraciously off ragwort, which is good as ragwort is poisonous to many animals.
