One of the many characters you see in Camden. There is a huge hostel in Camden called Arlington House (in a forbidding building opened in 1908), which is home to a big community of working men who are down on their luck. It is not a doss house as many people think – it is a real community, and a considerable number of residents choose to live there rather than go into council flats.
Arlington House was set up as part of a network of Victorian mega-hostels, following recommendations in the Report on Vagrancy which established: “The right which every person possesses to demand food and shelter.”
