Disappointing Dateline London earlier today discussing the migrant crisis at Calais.
The panel used "migrant" and "asylum seeker" interchangeably, as if they are the same. Even Michael Goldfarb, who is normally precise over language, did this. Asylum seekers have a legal status, illegal economic migrants do not.
Disgraceful (and ignorant) comments from Marc Roche.
If the people at Calais are genuine asylum seekers France is violating their Human Rights by not processing them and giving them identity papers. If they are are economic migrants France needs to bear in mind that the United Kingdom has already taken many millions of economic migrants from eastern Europe and it is not fair to expect us to take any more economic migrants. As for the idea that we should show "solidarity" with the rest of Europe the idea is absurd - we want to leave the EU, not get more enmeshed in it.
And does this episode not show how dogmatic and nonsensical the European Union is.
They are not willing to admit that the Schengen area has failed, and so they allow a major humanitarian crisis to build up rather than accept that the Schengen area has become unworkable.
