The odious smugness displayed by David Aaronovitch

I was repelled by the odious smugness displayed by David Aaronovitch on Newsnight yesterday in which he puffed out his chest and preened himself with pleasure over his self-appointed role as a "change-merchant" (or some such appellation) of the Blair era.

Journalists are of course politicians, just as civil servants are politicians and heads of charities are politicians.

The establishment is infused by unelected politicians.

But I cannot think that David Aaronovitch has been particularly influential.

Even in his imagined role as a change-jockey I doubt that he influenced any policy plus or minus one per cent - probably not even that.
